Glendalough & Powerscourt Estate and Gardens

Today we rented a car for the first time and decided to drive to Glendalough (Ruins of a Monastic City) and Powerscourt Estates. Glendalough (Glen-duh-lohhk) is about 50 minutes from us and Powerscourt about 35.

Wayne did such a good job driving! We had the tiniest car - it's literally called the Nissan Micra. As in Micr'a'-organism-with-four-wheels. We were very surprised that the highways of Dublin quickly turned into the very narrow country roads of rural Ireland. Within 20 minutes we were on winding country roads, so narrow that the word "SLOW" painted in the lane was too wide to fit - the "W" of Slow was in the oncoming lane. (why not paint the word smaller, you ask? I don't know)

1. Our trusty-Stead - the Nissan Micra (Also, at my sister Sarah's request, I will now number pictures for ease of commenting.) =)
2. Ready to Go!

7. Driving through Roundwood - where actor Daniel Day Lewis is from, and lives, when not in Hollywood. Apparently he lives out of town on a huge farm with lots of acreage and is often seen sitting by himself in the local pub. A bit of a recluse - that one.

8. "Glendalough is home to one of the most important monastic sites in Ireland. This early Christian monastic settlement was founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century and from this developed the ‘Monastic City’.
The ‘City’ consists of a number of monastic remains, and the most impressive being the Round Tower which stands 30m high. The main group of monastic buildings lies downstream near the Round Tower. The grounds were entered through the Gateway, which has two round headed granite arches."
(From Glendolough.ie)
9. The arches, just mentioned.

26. Norah amongst ruins from 500AD. And she was born in 2010AD.
27. Wayne says his Oma always waves in photos so he decided to do one of those. =)

32.In this one, Norah stepped up onto the stone and said, "Mommy take peeture uh Norah" and turned toward the camera.
33. Incredible - the things this child is experiencing at 18 months.
34.Norah would not come out of this church. We were quite aways outside of it, in the small adjacent graveyard and we kept calling her name. All she would do is quietly respond, "No".

35.And back on up the road to Powerscourt Gardens and Estate.

38.Norah and Daddy. I kept saying to Wayne - "this must be what it's like for Kate Middleton to go to tea at her Mother-in-law's".

41.These are all individually laid-stones, not flat, but each perfectly laid on their side.
42. "Yeah, the garden's great - I'm thirsty"

47.This was the real deal pub. A very good pint of Guiness, by candlelight, no less. This pub has been open since 1798.

We drove a car in Antigua which has us driving on the "wrong" side. I was a passenger and kept going to the wrong door! Uncle Ray would need the wipers and always turned on the turn signal instead! Luckily, the gas and brake pedal were on the same side as here or it would have been scary. :O
I love the "Oma wave" but it is hard to see Wayne - you gotta get one closer up!

Aunt Janet,
How funny! Yeah, I don't know if Wayne had trouble with turn signal/wind shield wipers. Come to think of it, he WAS spraying the windshielf cleaner quite a bit.... =) No, he says they were on the "usual" side.
