Surprise Run for a Friend's 40th

We met one morning in Bray (20 minutes south of us), at John's cousin, Gary's place. This was a secret run in order to surprise John for his 40th birthday - a milestone he was not too excited about reaching.
When we walked in, Gary showed us the brown "pile" of cake and said this was his final product. He is 45 years old and has never, ever baked a cake. I find this....shocking. Well, sadly, we teased him but believed that this really was his final product - after all, he wrote "Asics" on it (shoe brand) and told us it was meant to be a running shoe so we just felt bad for him. (he's very good at keeping a straight face....)
Five minutes later, he brings out this pristine work of cake-manship genius and got that moment he lives for - the sigh of relief from us and huge laughter. He did very well!

Last phone calls coordinating go-time. John and Maria were going on John's birthday run up to the Leadmines (a beautiful mountain top, just outside Dublin). Well, we ran a different route, from Bray, to beat them to the top and hide in the heather for a surprise ambush. I got John some "40" balloons and carried them up in my backpack (got a few people honking at me along the road and I just said,
"Ya, thanks, it feels great to be 40!"
The view when we reached the summit! It was a gorrrrgeous February day (after many weeks of horrendous storms, record-setting wind and floods across the country). So this day was all the more beautiful because of the darkness that preceded it.

Looking down toward Dun Laoghaire and out to Howth.
(Didn't plan for the balloons to be in it, but it was windy enough that they whipped around for a cameo)
Out the other way toward the Great Sugarloaf mountain.
Nearly all of us hiding in the bushes up at the top. Maria (running with John) called us and pretended she was calling her daughter - she told us it would be 10 minutes and they'd be coming from a different path so up we went to find a new hiding spot among the sticker bushes (with me squeezing tight to the 4 balloons so they didn't all pop).
Gary yelling at us: "Everyone, get DOWN! Shut up! Quiet, I see someone!"
Ten minutes and 12 false-alarms later, we see Maria's small white dog come up the trail.....behind us (not in front of us, as we thought). Thankfully, we were so deep in the bushes that he still couldn't see us so we all stood up and screamed "Happy Birthday" to John, as he made the summit. He was completely shocked and so happy. We had noise-makers and all went into a very ugly rendition of "Happy Birthday" for him. It was not the best choral performance but hopefully he got the gist....
Then over to the next summit where the actual Lead Mines are. This is the old chimney from the mine.
John is a really incredible member of our group and he was not happy about turning 40 so we all wanted to do our part to ease the transition into this new decade. John is a huge inspiration to me - to all of us. He lost a great deal of weight in the last year and half (nearly 100 lbs.), ran a very fast marathon in the process and continues to run circles around every member in the group. He is the best person to go on long runs with because he tells stories non-stop and by the end, you barely know you've covered 15 miles, and spent half the time talking about each other's grandparents. The mark of a truly wonderful running companion - and friend. :)  So, to John and his 40th year - may he feel as good about his 40s as we all feel about him!
After the run, we met in their favorite café in Bray and had lunch (where Wayne & Norah and a couple friends were waiting). Before heading home on the train, we stopped on the beach for Norah to throw some stones. Here's a look up toward Bray Head.

Valentine's, First Sleepover and Chai Tea

Preparations for St. Patrick's Day have begun.
Wayne walking Norah to school one morning. Took this from our balcony looking down at them. (Norah in the blue coat)

Norah's fairy got into the Valentine's day spirit.
On Valentine's Day, after school we went with some kids/parents to a play-place down in Greystones.
Valentine's night, instead of doing a dinner-date, we asked my friend Kirsten to come by and play with the kids for an hour or so while Wayne and I walked down to a yoga class. It's a restorative/meditation-type yoga class that I've gone to for awhile and absolutely love it. I really wanted Wayne to experience it and he loved it. It was a nice thing for us to get away and do together. Say what you will about Valentine's Day but I think its nice to have a day where you give cards and chocolates. I just do. :) Whether they're for yourself, a friend, a girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife - I think it's a sweet holiday. Plus, I still have about 40 truffles to eat (already had at least 20) so I scored (from friends and a neighbor).
On Saturday afternoon, Kirsten came back over but this time, to drop Lilia off for the girls' first ever sleepover. It was so fun, and easy it was shocking. The girls had an absolute ball together, were asleep by 8:30 and both slept until 7:30 am (not waking once in the night). I just assumed Lilia might wake up at least once in the night, open her eyes and think, "wait, where in the helllll am I??" (she's only 3). But, never once. First sleepover: Massive success.
Lilia thinks Norah is absolutely hilarious so she basically just giggles the whole time.
We had a manicure party and then made paper flowers so I was just rockin' it as a babysitter. :)
We played restaurant and they took our orders.....
A couple weeks ago, I made Chai Tea (recipe courtesy of dear Lindsay - a friend from high school who is a blogger-extraordinaire). Until reading Lindsay's blog on this, I honestly did not realize Chai was something I could make at home. I'll leave these discoveries to Lindsay and rely on her blog to continue schooling me in all things awesome. :) It is shockingly easy. You need about 3 spices (including a couple you have in your cupboard already) and black tea, which you already have, I'm sure. SUPER easy. I kept the mixture in a separate container and warmed it with almond milk to make the non-dairy sweet Chai-tea lattes that I've been missing for so long in Dublin. You can get Chai tea lattes in cafes but only with cow's milk (no alternatives here, except soy milk, and even that is rare).
Weeks ago: Our Friday tea and babyccino at Café Du Journal (my/our favorite café in Monkstown).

An Irish Super Bowl

Well, in case you hadn't heard...the Seattle Seahawks won the 2014 SuperBowl!! And we were in Ireland for the occasion (obviously) but we didn't let that dampen our party. Also, given that the game started at 11:30 pm, Dublin time, we did a full media-blackout (ie, turning our phones on airplane mode) and watched it in the morning with our good friends Nolan & Karen. We drove over to their place the next morning at 8 am (since they have a TV and we don't) and thankfully they were able to record the whole thing on some TV program that I still don't understand.
Karen is one of these women that is so thoughtful and creative and loving and does amazing things like this. I just adore her. So, despite being the only Irish person at our "party", Karen went alllll out for the Seahawks.
At 10 pm the night before, I realized I really regretted not going online and ordering some Seahawks gear to support them on Super Bowl day. For the first time in my life, I really want a Seahawks jersey! Call me a fair-weather fan (which I am) but I was so proud of these guys.
(Now one team I'm not "fair-weather" for, are the Mariners. I will always, always love them and I suppose it helps that they've never been particularly good. (except 2001).)
Back to my outfit. So 10 pm rolls around and I realize I don't even own anything lime green or bright blue. Commence rummaging through closet and 'ta-daa!' - I had a lime green race shirt from the Dublin half-marathon, lime green running socks and a bright blue sweater. So... I busted out some computer paper and paints and made a "12th" man sign - whiiiicch I then used packing tape to affix to the front of my shirt. Voila - ramshackle Seahawks gear.
Oh, and! On the way to their house, in the car, I made this Seahawk-crown out of pipe-cleaners. Wayne was pretty impressed. I didn't have my phone (media blackout) so I couldn't look up the shape of the Seahawks logo but "it came to me in a vision" and look at this masterpiece! hahaha!

Kah-Kawww!
(Genuinely, it's a wonder any one hangs out with me)
Sweet baby Hannah-ban
I desssperately wanted the Seahawks to hold on to their lead and win this thing (but part of me thought it wasn't possible) and yet I still couldn't help saying, over and over, "I just feel so bad for Peyton Manning!"
Whooooo----weeeee this was an exciting return!!! I was jumping and screaming and scaring both Norah and baby Hannah with my hysterics.
Oh my word....it happened!!
Walking while Norah was in school one morning. The bad days in winter are SO bad in Dublin that you just have to take photos of how gorgeous it is on the sunny days.
Auntie Karen (who got Norah the fairy door for Christmas) is now her unofficial fairy Godmother. She takes this role seriously and keeps getting Norah these amazing things... This time it's the fairy clothes-line and here I'm showing Norah for the first time (saying 'Rainbow' must have put her laundry out while she was away at school).
Seeing the clothes-line for the fairy!
Uncle Dan's Christmas package, which he sent on December 5th, 2013, arrived in Dublin on about February 8th.... What a saga. It sat in L.A. for about 4 weeks before being returned to him and he had to re-send it. Needless to say, this was one highly anticipated box and he spoiled us rotten with beautiful clothes. Norah's new jumper is cuter than I can possibly convey. And all the shirts and another dress have the Eiffel Tower on them so she was in love.
Cold day but having snacks in the park.
Norah spends most afternoons coloring and writing words. Often they're nonsense sometimes they make sense. This day, she came up with these and spelled them completely on her own except for one.
"Robin"
"Mercury" on 2 lines.
"Lemon"
"Lady Bug"
A Valentine for Lilia with a Snowman.
And a beautiful February Day - walking from Dun Laoghaire to Sandycove and the 40 Foot. (1 mile from us) Just gorgeous!
