December 5, 2011 Trek to Post Office and learning curve on Dublin Bus

Beautiful old school about 1 mile from us. Now I believe it's a Montessori school but it still has the "Girls" and "Boys" separate entrances marked.
A VERY cold walk to the Post Office in Glenageary (about 1.5 miles from us) to collect our 5 boxes that we mailed from Seattle. They alll arrived! It was so exciting to finally have these and get to put up our pictures and little sentimental knick-knacks.
Oh and one of our cultural learning curves happened today as well. On this walk, just before this picture was taken, we stood at a bus stop only to see our bus pass us by.

We went to the bus stop (had the right number on top and we were sure to be on the right (left) side of the road) and waited. We were excited to see our 46A coming a minute after we got there (because it was FRIGID cold out), only to find that it drove right past us. We thought, “ok, maybe it was full?” Or maybe THAT 46A doesn’t stop at this particular stop? So, we decided to walk up to the next stop, (which was in sight about a block up) and yet again, it happened. Luckily, later in the afternoon we had our meeting at our apartment with Lisa from the management company.  She was very kind in explaining to us that you have to put your hand out and motion to the driver that you want to catch that bus. (which, of COURSE, is not rocket science and isn’t even far off from what you would do in Seattle but for some reason, that idea was lost on us at the time) Wayne even said, when the first bus drove past us, “maybe we’re not standing close enough to the curb? Should we stand here instead?”
Along our walk - just a pretty church.
This is outside our apartment looking across to the West Pier of Dun Laoghaire (Dun Leary). Near the white car you can see Wayne and Norah walking.
The train going past. I LOVE this aspect of our apartment. It's nearly silent which is nice but when the trains do go by, you hear this quiet sort of "whooshing" as it goes over the tracks. I love it. And at night, you can see all the people sitting on the train which is cool
And Dad, if you happen to see this: This is Wayne wearing that wool hat you bought for him. We finally got it in our boxes that we picked up and Wayne LOVES it. It's truly frigid cold here so the winter gear is really valuable now.

Had to chuckle over the bus incident. I often say "I failed at mind reading - if you want my bus, your toes better be hugging the curb!" Hopefully the bus riding goes better now that you know the cultural way to flag down the bus. Everywhere it's different. :)

Aunt Janet,
Haha! Yes, that's completely what we were doing -we expected them to just understand that we wanted THAT bus! =) Now we know better.
We felt more than a little silly.
